I've been distracted by Skyward Sword for far too long so I've not got the full details of the controversy, but I thought it was about time a high-profile artist like myself made an official statement.
Rumours abound that, following several complaints, Hasbro is considering action by removing a very popular character (in fact, one of my favourites) from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
Some are complaining how her actions and behaviour could be misconstrued as offensive to those who have learning disabilities.
Others are reacting strongly to these opinions, calling them words like "ableist" for trying to remove this character from the show.
The disabled persons of this community are arguing that they
should decide what's offensive to them, not the white knights or the haters.
Removing this character would be no easy task, especially as she's nearly had more appearances than any other of the popular secondary characters. And though she is shown to be clumsy sometimes, her role as a regular, unmaligned, functioning member of the community in the show perhaps demonstrates a positive example that it's OK to be different, one of the very themes of the show itself.
So please, Hasbro, if you're reading this, I beg of you:#SaveSweetieBelle.
